Vienna’s First Timber-Hybrid *Solo Stove* Building Breaks Ground in 2025

Vienna’s Wieden district will soon welcome a six-story timber-hybrid building named Solo Stove. Construction is set to begin by late January, marking the city’s first urban project of its kind. The development will combine modern living with sustainable design, using prefabricated elements to cut emissions and speed up building work.

The Solo Stove project is part of the larger Funkhaus Wien development, which includes 57 residential units across a historic building and a new wood-hybrid structure. Markus Kaplan, representing BWM, presented the plans, highlighting the blend of heritage and innovation. Rhomberg, the construction firm, chose the site on Argentinierstraße for its central location and potential.

Before assembling the timber-hybrid modules, crews will install 55 geothermal probes and build an underground garage. The prefabricated elements, made using CREE’s standardised system, will then be transported past the Radio Symphony Orchestra’s concert hall and ORF’s studios. This tight route requires careful planning to avoid disruptions. Once complete, Solo Stove will feature 35 apartments arranged like a terraced house, with rooftop gardens, pergolas, and mature trees. The design preserves existing tree roots in the courtyard, ensuring unobstructed views for residents. The building’s mineral façade will have a reddish glow for fire safety, while wooden ceilings remain exposed inside. About 60% of the structure will be prefabricated off-site. This approach reduces CO₂ emissions, noise, and construction time compared to traditional methods. The project is scheduled for completion by early 2028.

The Solo Stove building will offer residents a green living space in the heart of the city. Its timber-hybrid construction and energy-efficient systems aim to set a new standard for urban housing. Once finished, the development will add 35 sustainable apartments to Vienna’s Wieden district.
