Veteran's $120 Rolex from 1960 now worth up to $75,000 after shocking appraisal

A former US Army serviceman received a stunning surprise after discovering the true value of a Rolex he bought in Germany over six decades ago. The vintage timepiece, purchased for just $120 in 1960, has now been appraised at tens of thousands of dollars—far beyond his modest expectations.

The veteran acquired the Rolex GMT Master reference 6542, the very first model of its kind, while stationed in Germany. Following advice from a sergeant, he bought it as a gift for his father before returning to the US. The watch remained a cherished keepsake, carefully preserved with its original box, sales receipt, chronometer bulletin, and even the matching bracelet.

An appraisal later revealed its extraordinary worth. Without the box and papers, the watch alone was valued at $35,000 to $45,000. But with the full set of documentation, experts estimated its price at $65,000 to $75,000. The veteran, who had expected a value of around $1,500, was left nearly speechless and visibly emotional.

Such vintage Rolex models have surged in value over recent decades. In the 1990s, similar GMT-Masters sold for $5,000 to $10,000. By 2026, auction records from Phillips and Christie's show prices reaching $150,000 to $300,000 or more. Collectors prize original features like unpolished cases, matching serial numbers, and faded aluminium 'Pepsi' bezels—all of which this watch retains.

The serviceman's modest purchase has become a rare and highly sought-after collector's item. Its pristine condition, complete documentation, and historical significance ensure its place among the most valuable vintage Rolex models. The discovery marks a remarkable return on a $120 investment made over 60 years ago.
