Veracruz’s Bold Peace Initiative Unites Communities Against Violence in 2025
Veracruz has launched a wide-ranging peace initiative to tackle violence and strengthen community bonds. Under Governor Rocío Nahle García’s leadership, the state hosted roundtable discussions in 18 regions during 2025. These efforts included cultural events, sports activities, and public campaigns aimed at fostering unity and reducing conflict.
Between October 2024 and December 2025, the state organised 386 peace-building events across its municipalities. Thousands took part in sports fairs, bike rides, and anti-violence marches. Murals, cultural exhibitions, and peace choirs also formed part of the programme, alongside workshops and health campaigns.
A key strategy, ‘Yes to Disarmament, Yes to Peace’, was coordinated by the National Defense Ministry (Sedena) and the Catholic Church. This led to 230 firearms being anonymously exchanged for cash in 61 municipalities. Meanwhile, 281 state-level meetings and 4,828 regional sessions produced 1,889 agreements on local peace efforts. Next month, Veracruz will establish civic peace and justice councils to build on these results. The public has actively engaged in educational and cultural activities, reinforcing the push for long-term stability.
The initiative has already seen thousands participate in events designed to cut violence and promote solidarity. With firearms exchanged, agreements reached, and new councils on the horizon, the programme continues to expand. Authorities now focus on sustaining these efforts through structured community involvement.
