USA Today Recognizes Abingdon for Potential Success in Two Award Categories
Abingdon, a staple town in Virginia's scenic mountains, has once again found itself in the running for recognition in the USA Today Visitors' Choice Awards. This time, the town is competing in two categories: Favorite Village Food Scene and Fave Southern Village.
The nomination is based on Abingdon's historic Key Street and its diverse shopping choices, as well as its renowned food scene. In 2021, WSLS 10, a local news station, launched a series called Abingdon Eats to highlight several of the town's standout restaurants, including Foresta, The Girl and the Raven, Peppermill, The Tavern, and 128 Pecan.
Abingdon's food scene has been showcased in various media outlets, and the town has gained recognition for its culinary offerings in the past. In fact, Abingdon won the title for Favorite Village Food Scene in 2022, 2021, 2020, and 2019.
The USA Today Visitors' Selection awards are based on public voting, with each individual able to cast their vote once per day. Voting for both contests ends at noon on Monday, February 20.
Abingdon is not the only Virginia town competing in these awards. Another Tennessee community, Jonesborough, was also nominated for Best Southern Village. Jonesborough's attractions include the Wetlands Theme park, Jonesborough Repertory Theater, and Tennessee Hills Distillery.
Abingdon is competing against 19 other small-town food scenes from across the United States. Other candidates for Best Southern Small Town include Anna Maria Island in Florida, Bryson City in North Carolina, Buena Vista in Virginia, and West Monroe in Louisiana. Towns in Maine, Texas, California, Oregon, Minnesota, and more are also included in the competition.
