US Libraries Rally Workers to Share Stories and Defend Free Access
Libraries across the US are calling on workers to share their stories and highlight their vital role in communities. The American Library Association (ALA) has launched a campaign to remind people how libraries serve as beacons of knowledge, inclusion, and connection. By speaking up, staff hope to secure support and protect intellectual freedom.
The ALA’s Show Up for Our Libraries campaign urges library workers to share their experiences. These personal stories help demonstrate how libraries foster learning, bring people together, and defend free access to information. Even small contributions—like posting on social media or recounting daily interactions—can make a difference.
Libraries also play a key part in promoting diversity and understanding. By curating collections that reflect many voices, they create spaces where everyone feels represented. Librarians act as bridges, ensuring people can explore ideas and find the resources they need. The ALA’s National Library Legislative Day takes this advocacy further. From 25 to 26 February 2023, workers and supporters gathered in Washington, D.C., to push for federal policies that protect libraries. Another initiative, Unite Against Book Bans, focuses on defending challenged books and the right to read freely. Both efforts aim to strengthen libraries against funding cuts and censorship.
The push to share library stories comes at a critical time. By highlighting their impact, workers hope to secure funding and keep collections open to all. These campaigns also reinforce libraries as essential spaces for learning, debate, and community.
