Urban Evolution - City Development in the Lens of Buga
In a significant development, Erfurt's northern region has been transformed with the creation of the Geraaue, a expansive, continual green corridor sprawling along the western bank of the Gera river. Spanning a distance of approximately 4.5 kilometers from the Nordpark to the Kilianipark, existing green zones have been extended, upgraded, and interconnected with newly acquired park areas, making it the largest landscape park in Thuringia.
Covering approximately 60 hectares, the new green zone provides the young neighborhoods with a high-quality green infrastructure, consisting of serene park areas, varied playgrounds, and sports facilities. The green corridor serves as a safe and picturesque route that links the new housing developments with Erfurt's historic city center.
One notable addition to the revamped landscape is the Gera cycling path, a new continuous route that leads securely from the city into the open countryside north of Gispersleben. The urban planning and economic needs of the city have been balanced with conservation efforts, ensuring nature, flood protection, and monument preservation.
Divided into multiple sections, the multifaceted Geraaue recreation area caters to various interests. It serves as a place of integration for visitors and, for the residents of northern Erfurt, an essential site of identification. The overall project boasts the following key features:
- Location: Gera river, Erfurt, Thuringia
- Cycling/Running Trails: Gera-BUGA-Weg, intertwining with regional cycling/hiking routes
- Recreational Facilities: Playgrounds, picnic areas, sports fields, nature observation
- Accessibility: Suitable for all ages and abilities, with well-maintained paths
The Geraaue is a vital component of Erfurt's wider green infrastructure, offering a diverse blend of leisure, recreation, and natural beauty that appeals to both locals and tourists.
The new green zone created along the Gera river, known as the Geraaue, extends beyond lifestyle aspects by offering home-and-garden elements such as serene park areas, varied playgrounds, and sports facilities. The Gera cycling path, integrated within the Geraaue, connects the modern housing developments with the historic city center, enhancing the overall home-and-garden experience for residents.
