U.S. imposes sweeping 2017 sanctions on Russia amid election interference claims

The U.S. introduced sweeping sanctions against Russia on 27 July 2017, targeting key industries and officials. The move followed accusations of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election. President Trump signed the bill into law despite earlier objections, marking a sharp escalation in tensions between the two nations. The sanctions package, described by House Speaker Paul Ryan as one of the most expansive in history, restricts President Trump from easing penalties without congressional approval. It focuses on Russia's defence, intelligence, mining, shipping, and railway sectors, as well as banks and energy firms.

In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the U.S. to reduce its diplomatic staff in Russia by 755 by 1 September 2017. Moscow also seized two U.S. diplomatic properties, escalating the dispute further. Relations between the two countries have worsened amid what Russia calls growing 'Russophobia' in the West.

The EU warned that the U.S. measures could harm European economic interests, threatening retaliation. Previous sanctions, imposed by Russia on the EU in 2014, reportedly cost Russia $55 billion and the EU $100 billion, according to UN estimates. Despite the current tensions, the U.S. and Russia have collaborated on major projects since the Second World War. The new U.S. sanctions tighten restrictions on Russia's economy and limit the president's ability to lift them. Russia's retaliation, including staff cuts and property seizures, signals a deepening rift. The EU's potential response adds another layer of uncertainty to the ongoing dispute.
