In Sao Paulo, Brazil – the metropolis with the highest number of Portuguese speakers globally – the Virada Lusofona event unfolds this very day and tomorrow. This cultural extravaganza is overseen by the Portuguese institution, Instituto Portugal Brasil 200 anos.

Twenty-four hours of Portuguese literature unfold in São Paulo

In downtown São Paulo, the Mário de Andrade Library hosts a 24-hour literary event, Lusófona Turn, from 6:00 PM today until 6:00 PM on Sunday. This cultural occasion, part of the annual Virada Cultura program, features prominent authors such as Itamar Vieira Junior, Leandro Carnal, Andréa Del Fuego, João Paulo Trevisan, Antônio Prata, Renato Janine Ribeiro, and others. Activities include literary panels, poetry readings, and film screenings, with free admission.

The event came about following a challenge from the Secretary of Culture of São Paulo to curator José Manuel Diogo, president of the Instituto Portugal Brasil 200 anos, to contribute to the Virada Cultural program. Diogo proposed 24 hours of debates and discussions with writers in a focused location, with an emphasis on literature and the Portuguese language.

Guilherme Borba, director of the Mário de Andrade Library, sees the Lusófona Turn as a more targeted and well-planned event for the library, as it will be tailored to its audience, mission, and vision. However, this year's event will feature only Brazilian authors due to time constraints for planning and inviting writers from outside Brazil.

Manuel Diogo emphasizes that the event aims to demonstrate the vast territory of the Portuguese language, inhabited by all. While they were unable to bring Portuguese authors this year, they plan to do so in the future.

The Lusófona Turn event is one of hundreds of cultural happenings organized by the São Paulo city government as part of the Virada Cultura program, which takes place every May with a variety of performances, theater presentations, circus, cinema, and activities in museums and public spaces throughout the city for 24 hours.
