Troisdorf's Free Fruit Tree Giveaway Lets Residents Grow Their Own Harvest

Troisdorf's annual fruit tree initiative has once again given residents the chance to plant their own trees at home. The scheme, running since 2017, continues to grow in popularity each year. This time, locals collected a variety of fruit-bearing saplings—all provided free of charge by the city.

The 2024 distribution included apple, pear, cherry, damson plum, mirabelle plum, and quince trees. Among the most sought-after varieties were Alkmene apples, Gravenstein cookers, Gute Luise pears, and the Hedelfingen Giant Cherry. Other options, such as the Mirabelle de Nancy plum and Constantinople quince, also proved popular with participants.

Each tree was handed over as a bare-root half-standard specimen, complete with a stake, tying materials, and detailed planting instructions. The handover itself was managed by staff from the Office for Road Construction, Development Contributions, Traffic, Green Spaces, and Flood Protection. On-site experts in green space planning were also available to offer advice on proper planting techniques and long-term pruning.

To take part, residents had to pledge that they would plant, care for, and permanently maintain the trees in line with professional guidelines. While the exact number of varieties distributed this year has not been made public, the city has confirmed the event's continued success. Those interested in next year's campaign can now register online at www.troisdorf.de/baumwunsch to secure a tree and receive updates on the next distribution date.

The initiative has firmly established itself as a key part of Troisdorf's green efforts since its launch in 2017. By providing free fruit trees and expert guidance, the city supports residents in expanding local greenery. Registration for the 2025 campaign is already open for those wishing to participate.
