Witness History Up Close: Mill Tours on Mill Day
Highlighting Traditional Skills: MillDay Exhibits Artisan Workshops - Traditional craftsmanship takes center stage: Mill Day highlights industrial plants
Get ready to step back in time on Pentecost Monday! Open your doors to the past as the 32nd German Mill Day shines a light on the ancient craft of milling in the Rhineland and Westphalia. This tradition, once thriving and ever-present, harnesses the power of water and wind to grind grain, process oils, fabricate paper, and more.
The event kicks off with Mill Day, an initiative spearheaded by the German Society for Mill Studies and Preservation. This announcement was made by the Landscape Association Rhineland (LVR) based in Cologne. "Many locals have seen their local mills still grinding grain in their lives," said Mill Day coordinator, Julia König, of the LVR.
Join in on demonstrations, hikes, or bike tours, depending on what your mill of choice has to offer. Remarkably, North Rhine-Westphalia was once swarming with mills, producing everything from ground grain to paper, sawn wood, and processed rags. Windmills, water mills, and hydro power plants will be opening their doors for visitors in the Mill Region Rhineland nestled between the Erft, Wupper, and Sieg rivers. The iconic Grottenhertener windmill in Bedburg, Rhein-Erft district, will even offer a wind-dependent demonstration.

Local authorities and communities have traditionally organized inspections or festivals to promote commerce, preserve heritage, and foster a sense of community.
In these events, visitors can expect to see:
- Cultural Celebrations: Music, food, and crafts native to the region highlighting the region's unique cultural tapestry.
- Trade Activities: Checks on goods, maintenance of infrastructure, and promoting safe passage for merchants help maintain the region's economic momentum.
- Community Gatherings: Parades, local performances, and community discussions provide an opportunity for locals to connect, address issues, and celebrate their shared history.
Cologne, a major city in the Rhineland, may well hold festive events to honor the city's rich history and regional pride.
The community in Rhineland is encouraged to embrace their cultural heritage through community gatherings, such as festive events in Cologne that celebrate the city's rich history and regional pride. For those interested in expanding their skills, vocational training sessions might be offered during these events, focusing on outdoor-living and home-and-garden techniques, reflecting the lifestyle associated with mill towns.
