Tierisch gut - Lübeck mit Hund #32

A scenic 7.2-kilometre loop along the Trave River has opened for walkers and nature lovers. The Old Towpath in the Schellbruch Nature Reserve winds through meadows, forests, and lagoons, offering an easy route for all fitness levels. Starting in Lübeck’s Israelsdorf district, the trail is now accessible by public transport, though parking remains limited.

The trail begins near Israelsdorf, where visitors can follow a mix of paved paths, gravel tracks, and natural sections. A wooden boardwalk guides walkers through wetter areas, ensuring the route stays manageable in all conditions. Along the way, small watering holes provide spots for a drink or a quick splash.

Wildlife protection is a key feature of the trail. Parts of the path pass through protected nature reserves, including the Large Lagoon in the Lauerholz Landscape Protection Area. Here, dogs must stay on a leash, particularly near reed beds and water edges. Viewing platforms offer sweeping views of the lagoon, letting visitors observe birds and other wildlife without disturbance. The route takes in freshwater and brackish lagoons, open meadows, and small floodplain forests. Dogs can enjoy a dip or a good sniff in designated areas, but respect for local wildlife remains essential. The trail’s varied terrain and gentle pace make it ideal for a relaxed outdoor experience. Management of the Schellbruch Nature Reserve involves private landowners, the local council, and conservation groups like NABU. The district’s environmental office and the regional environmental agency also oversee maintenance and protection efforts.

The Old Towpath now provides a well-marked route through one of Lübeck’s most scenic nature reserves. With its mix of waterways, forests, and open spaces, the trail suits walkers, dog owners, and wildlife enthusiasts alike. Visitors are reminded to follow leash rules and protect the area’s natural habitats.
