Open wide the Christmas market gates - Thuringia’s Christmas Markets Sparkle as Advent Season Begins

Christmas markets have started opening across Thuringia as the Advent season begins. Several cities, including Gotha, Eisenach and Meiningen, welcomed visitors from November 23, with more markets launching later in the week.

Eisenach’s main Christmas market has been running since Monday, November 24. The city will also host a historical market at Wartburg Castle over the first three Advent weekends, beginning on November 28. This special event coincides with the weekend before the first Sunday of Advent.

Weimar’s market opened on November 27 and will continue until January 4. Visitors can enjoy ice skating and meet Santa while exploring the festive stalls.

Jena’s Christmas market also started on November 27, closing on December 22. A highlight includes Thuringia’s tallest Christmas pyramid, part of a fairground attraction.

Erfurt, home to the region’s largest market, opened its main event on November 27, running until December 22. The city also hosts smaller markets, such as Erfurter Winterberg, Winter Magic, and the Historical Christmas Market.

Gera and Suhl joined the celebrations slightly later, with Gera’s market opening on November 27 and Suhl’s on November 26. Both will remain open until December 23.

The markets offer a mix of traditional and unique experiences, from historical settings to fairground rides. With opening dates staggered across late November, visitors have multiple opportunities to enjoy the festive season in Thuringia’s towns and cities.
