Pedal your way through Thuringia with "Stadtradeln" in Gera!
Biking Initiative Kicks Off: City Riding in Thuringia Commences - Thuringia introduces the 'City Pedals' initiative, a new cycling project within the city
Gerra, along with 40 other Thuringian municipalities, has joined the "Stadtradeln" movement, a record-breaking participation in this year's European city cycling campaign. Originated by the Climate Alliance, "Stadtradeln" encourages participants to swap car journeys for cycling during a three-week spell, fighting climate change and fostering healthier lifestyles.
From citizens and students to employees and government officials, everyone's invited to kick treadmill routines to the curb and cycle as many daily routes as they can during the 21-day stretch. Schools, in particular, can win up to 10,000 euros in prize money for the greatest number of kilometers pedaled.
The state-wide launch for "Stadtradeln" first took place in the charming town of Stadtilm in 2022, with Transport State Secretary Tobias Knoblich claiming that it serves as a means to alter mobility behavior and complete daily trips to work or school by bike. The state government has been supporting the cause since 2016 by bearing the participation fees for municipalities.
This campaign has shown remarkable growth since its inception in 2016, with 131 Thuringian schools from 24 cities and municipalities participating in the 2021 competition. So, grab your helmet and get ready to race against Thuringia as you save the environment one pedal at a time!
