Universal Studios Announces Plans for New Theme Park in Bedford, England

Universal Studios has unveiled its ambitious plans for a new theme park in Bedford, England, set to open around 2031. The park, spanning a vast 476-acre site, will be a significant addition to the UK's entertainment landscape and a major investment for both Universal and the country.

The park's attractions will be based on popular Universal franchises, including Wicked and Minions, and will feature several themed lands. Among the most exciting offerings are expected to be the tallest rides in Europe, showcasing cutting-edge immersive technology that integrates attractions, food, merchandise, and costumes.

The resort will not only include a world-class theme park but also visitor accommodations, hotels, and a range of retail, dining, and entertainment areas known as CityWalk-style amenities. At the peak of construction in 2029, approximately 5,380 workers will be on site.

The project is expected to have a substantial economic impact, with nearly £50 billion generated during construction and the first 20 years of operation. Infrastructure improvements, including nearly £500 million in government funding for transport upgrades, are also planned to support the resort's development.

Phase 2 of the project will extend operations beyond the initial park opening to include new hotels, a convention center at the Lake Zone, and additional roadworks over the subsequent 20 years.

The U.K. culture secretary, Lisa Nandy, has expressed enthusiasm for the new theme park, stating it will be a significant boost for the economy, U.K. tourism, and the British public. The park, upon completion, is expected to be the biggest and best in Europe, offering thrilling rides, innovative attractions, and exciting entertainment.

This represents one of the UK's largest and most ambitious theme park developments to date. The new park is not yet named, but it is a part of Universal's global expansion, marking their second theme park in Europe. Shiz University, a potential themed land, may be included in the new park, although this has not been confirmed.

The construction is scheduled to start in 2026, and the park is anticipated to provide the British public with easy access to a world-class theme park experience. The new theme park will undoubtedly be a significant investment for both Universal and the U.K. as a whole.
