The commencement of the 2023 Fruit Planting Drive takes place
In the city of Pforzheim, Germany, residents have the opportunity to purchase fruit trees at an affordable price as part of the annual fruit tree planting action. The initiative, which has been ongoing since 1992, aims to encourage community participation in increasing urban greenery and promoting local fruit cultivation.
The action allows residents to buy fruit trees directly from the municipal office for €20 per tree. The available types of fruit trees include apple, pear, and cherry varieties. Those who order a tree can collect it on either November 10, 2023, at the municipal yard located on Wurmbergstraße 47-49, or on 27 October 2023 between 9 and 11 am at the Former City Nursery in Hohwiesenweg 40 (in front of the wastewater treatment plant).
The range of trees includes old, productive, site-appropriate fruit varieties, wild fruit varieties, and climate-tolerant wild trees with usable fruit. However, due to the effects of climate change, some sensitive fruit varieties have been removed from the range.
All fruit tree high-stocks and wild trees cost €15, while wild shrubs are priced at €5 or €10. It's important to note that the payment for the trees and shrubs must be made in cash upon collection.
The fruit tree planting action is targeted at open landscape or orchard areas, not private gardens. The area for planting must be in the open land, not fenced or built up, and not a protected area such as an FFH meadow.
The city administration has adjusted the classic range to include climate-tolerant wild trees, aiming to make traditional orchard farming more diverse and stable without losing tree and hedge structures in the long run. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Green Space and Infrastructure Department cooperate on this distribution.
Wurzelbare fruit tree high-stocks with support pole and bite protection will be distributed. Wild trees are usually offered as heisters, root bare or in a container with support pole and bite protection, and wild shrubs in a container without support pole.
Orders must be placed by 31 August 2023. Order forms can be obtained on the internet at www.pforzheim.de/stadt/umwelt-natur/naturschutz/streuobstwiesen/obstbaumpflanzaktion.html, in local offices, and at the Environmental Protection Agency (Luisenstr. 29, 75172 Pforzheim).
This distribution of trees is for planting in the open landscape at a subsidized price. The city of Pforzheim also distributes affordable fruit trees to owners of agricultural land annually. The care of young trees, especially in summer, has become increasingly demanding due to climate change, and different fruit varieties are having problems with dry periods due to climate change.
By participating in this initiative, residents can contribute to a greener and more sustainable city, while also enjoying the benefits of fresh, locally grown fruit.
- The planting action in Pforzheim also offers climate-tolerant wild trees to promote traditional orchard farming's diversity and stability, which is influenced by the effects of climate change.
- In addition to fruit trees, the city offers climate-tolerant wild shrubs at an affordable price as part of their effort to encourage community participation in environmental science, particularly in response to climate-change impacts on horticulture.
- The residents of Pforzheim can create a greener living space by integrating traditional fruit cultivation into their lifestyle, either in home-and-garden settings or in open landscape areas, with the help of various climate-tolerant fruit varieties available in the annual fruit tree planting action.
