Tesla Establishes New European Research and Development Center in Berlin-Köpenick

Tesla is set to establish a new European Research and Development (R&D) center in Berlin-Köpenick, marking a significant expansion of the electric vehicle company's presence in Germany.

The new center, initiated by Tesla manager Lars Moravy, will primarily focus on material research, vehicle development, and powertrain engineering. This move is expected to boost Tesla's efforts in Germany, where the company has been leading the refresh of the two more expensive models, S and X.

The decision to establish the Tesla R&D center in Berlin-Köpenick was made after considering over thirty-six locations, including a potential new construction. The site was chosen for its spacious area, good energy supply, and location between Berlin and Grünheide.

The center will be housed in an old factory with an area of approximately 20,000 square meters. Construction work is expected to begin once the permits are granted, with initial technical tests scheduled for 2026.

Initially, around 130 engineers from the Grünheide plant and smaller Berlin locations will move to Köpenick. The center is expected to grow to around 250 employees in the coming years, with plans to employ around 250 engineers in total.

It is worth noting that Tesla currently employs around 2,000 engineers and technicians in Germany, which is about one-fifth of the company's global workforce in this area. An important location for Tesla in Germany is Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate, where Tesla acquired the Grohmann supplier specializing in factory automation several years ago.

Tesla had previously promised a European R&D center as part of announcing the construction of a new factory in Berlin. The establishment of this new center reaffirms Tesla's commitment to Germany and its role in the development of electric vehicles.

Moravy was involved in the consideration of multiple locations and the eventual decision to establish the Tesla R&D center in Berlin-Köpenick. The center is a testament to Tesla's ongoing investment in research and development, aiming to push the boundaries of what is possible in electric vehicle technology.

As the world continues to transition towards sustainable energy solutions, the work being done at the new Tesla R&D center in Berlin-Köpenick is sure to contribute significantly to this transition.
