Teen’s Art Celebrates How a Capitals Player Changed His Life

A 14-year-old boy named Eakpinya Chailom has turned his admiration for a hockey player into creative artwork. His inspiration came after meeting Nic Dowd, a forward who runs a program for children with sensory needs. The encounter left a lasting impression on both Eakpinya and his family.

Eakpinya first connected with Dowd through Dowd’s Crowd, an initiative that helps young fans with sensory challenges attend Washington Capitals games. The program aims to make hockey more accessible for children who might otherwise struggle in crowded, noisy arenas.

After the meeting, Eakpinya felt motivated to create art reflecting his experience. His mother, Ekisara, later described Dowd as her son’s 'role model of kindness'. The teenager now hopes to spread the same positivity to others, wanting kids to feel confident about their differences. Dowd, who played for the Capitals during the 2025/26 season, has since moved to HC Lugano. Meanwhile, Mike Sgarbossa, another former Caps player, was also part of the organization that year before his own transfer.

Eakpinya’s artwork stands as a tribute to the impact of Dowd’s program. The initiative continues to provide opportunities for children with sensory needs to enjoy live hockey. For Eakpinya, the experience has become a source of personal inspiration and a way to encourage others.
