Tartu’s new Veeriku community garden fills up in record time

Tartu has expanded its community gardening programme with a new site in Veeriku. The last available plots there were allocated over the weekend, drawing nearly 100 local residents. Meanwhile, additional spaces remain open in Ihaste for those still interested in renting a garden plot.

The Veeriku Association, led by Kaisa Jõgeva, oversaw the distribution of the final plots in the neighbourhood’s newly designated community garden area. Residents can now rent a 30-square-metre space for €360 per year. Jõgeva also plans to develop the site into a broader gathering spot for the community.

The City of Tartu provided the unused land for this project, confirming its long-term commitment to community gardening. Indrek Ranniku, a city urban planner, described the initiative as a proven success, noting its positive impact on residents’ quality of life. Beyond Veeriku, new community gardens will soon open in Ihaste, Jaamamõisa, and along Timuti tänav. While Veeriku’s plots have been fully claimed, interested gardeners can still secure spaces in Ihaste before they run out.

The Veeriku community garden now hosts around 100 participants, with annual rent set at €360 per plot. Tartu’s city government continues to support such projects, ensuring unused land serves local community needs. More sites are planned, offering residents further opportunities to grow their own produce and connect with neighbours.
