Support for scheduling functions now extends to older Nest thermostat models via the Google Home application.
The Google Home app has received an update that brings a more streamlined and convenient user experience for controlling Nest Learning Thermostats. This update introduces a number of new features, including the ability to manually set temperature schedules for the Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen) and Nest Thermostat E directly within the Google Home app.
To set temperature schedules manually using the Google Home app, simply open the app on your mobile device, select your Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen) or Nest Thermostat E from the device list, navigate to the scheduling or temperature schedule section within the thermostat's settings, and create new temperature events for different times of the day or days of the week, specifying desired heat or cool setpoints. Existing schedules from the Nest app will automatically carry over, allowing you to edit them as needed.
In addition to temperature scheduling, users can also manage sensor preferences and set fan schedules as part of the thermostat settings. The updated energy dashboard provides a breakdown of usage by stage and heating type, if applicable, and includes a weekly year-over-year comparison of monthly energy usage.
While the rollout of this update is broad, some users have reported minor glitches initially, which can often be resolved by clearing the Google Home app cache or restarting the app.
This update consolidates thermostat controls alongside other smart home devices in Google Home, making it more convenient to manage temperature schedules in one place rather than juggling between the Nest app and Google Home app.
Other improvements in the Google Home app include more camera improvements in versions 3.37 and 3.38, as well as a new automations editor in Public Preview. The energy dashboard in the Google Home app has also been refreshed, showing separate totals for heating and cooling.
It's worth noting that older generations of Nest Learning Thermostat will be disconnected in the near future. However, the Google Home app now supports scheduling for these older thermostats as well.
