Stunning Ocean Photographer of the Year Exhibition Docks at Historic Chatham
A striking new photography exhibition opens at Historic Dockyard Chatham this weekend. Ocean Photographer of the Year showcases 116 backlit images capturing the beauty and fragility of marine life. The collection includes everything from tiny sea creatures to sweeping underwater landscapes.
One standout is Kaushik Subramanian's drone shot of grey whales encircling a boat. Jenny Stock's image of a coral wall teeming with spiralling fish also features among the highlights. The exhibition aims to deepen visitors' connection to the ocean through powerful visual storytelling.
The display is produced by the team at Oceanographic and marks its first UK appearance. Before arriving in Chatham, the exhibition toured Sydney, Melbourne, and Cape Town. It now occupies a historic space where Royal Navy ships have been built since the 17th century.
Historic Dockyard Chatham spans 80 acres and houses some of Britain's best-preserved naval buildings. The site provides a fitting backdrop for images that explore marine ecosystems, human-ocean relationships, and underwater wonders. Visitors can expect close-up portraits of microscopic life alongside sweeping shots of vast ocean habitats. The exhibition runs from March 28 until the end of August 2025. Organisers hope the photographs will inspire a greater appreciation for marine conservation. No future tour dates beyond Chatham have been announced so far.
The Ocean Photographer of the Year exhibition brings global underwater stories to a historic British dockyard. It offers a rare chance to see award-winning marine photography in a setting steeped in naval history. The show remains open to the public for five months, closing in late August.
