Students Walk 411,000 km in BRAWO's Epic Step Challenge

A 10-week walking challenge has pushed students across the BRAWO region to get moving. The step BRAWO competition aimed to fight inactivity by encouraging children to walk more. Between November 2025 and January 2026, participants logged millions of steps in a bid to win prizes and improve their fitness.

Over 2,500 students from schools in the Peine district took part in the challenge. Five local schools joined, with pupils tracking their daily steps for nearly three months. Together, they recorded an impressive 613,769,108 steps, covering a distance of 411,225 kilometres—enough to circle the Earth 10.3 times.

At Groß Ilsede Primary and Secondary School, two classes secured top-three spots. Class 3b came second with 7,005,758 steps, while Class 3a finished third with 5,410,860 steps. The overall winners were Class 3b from Abbensen Primary School, who walked 9,028,751 steps to claim the step BRAWO trophy and certificates.

Across the entire BRAWO region, participants collectively logged 84,276,316 steps, equivalent to 56,465 kilometres. The exact number of schools involved remains unclear, as organisers have not released full participation details for 2025/2026.

The challenge wrapped up on January 29, 2026, with winning classes receiving awards for their efforts. The event highlighted how small daily efforts can add up to significant distances. Organisers hope the initiative will inspire long-term habits and future participation in physical activity.
