Erlangen's much-anticipated 2023 Bergkirchweih has officially kicked off, with a bang! This sprawling, 11-day revelry will continue until the 16th of June, promising to draw hordes of revelers. Boasting a rich history and an irresistible charm, this Bavarian folk festival is more than just beer and barrels; it's a cherished piece of the region's cultural heritage.

In the heart of Franconia, you'll hear the local cry, "The mountain calls," during this lively season. The call to the Burgberg refers to the historic breweries that once hid their kegs within the mountain's cool, subterranean tunnels.

A Gala Send-Off

Today, 14 jovial beer gardens are serving up fest beer, serenaded by various bands and DJs. The fun doesn't end there! Around 80 thrill-seeking rides are scattered across the festival grounds, ensuring there's a dose of excitement for everyone.

The Bergkirchweih is set to close with a unique celebration, a so-called "beer funeral." On June 16, the innkeepers will solemnly carry the last barrel of beer through the crowd, marching to the timeless tunes of "Lili Marleen." This reverential procession culminates in a symbolic burial, marking the bittersweet conclusion of the festivities.

[Footnote 1]: While a "beer funeral" (Bierbegräbnis) is a common event at traditional beer festivals in Bavaria, symbolizing the end of beer enjoyment for the year or the mourning of the festival’s conclusion, specific details about a beer funeral at the end of Erlangen’s Bergkirchweih are not widely publicized in official festival announcements or available descriptions from recent years.

[Footnote 2]: If Erlangen’s Bergkirchweih includes a beer funeral, it would likely serve as a playful and ritualistic way to bid farewell to the festival, marking the end of eleven days of communal celebration, beer halls, and traditional music, aligning with broader Bavarian tradition.

[Footnote 3]: Current available sources focus more on the general festivities, traditions, and countdown excitement rather than detailed accounts of a beer funeral ritual in Erlangen. If this ritual is part of the Bergkirchweih, it underscores the playful, symbolic acts used to mark the transition from festival excitement back to everyday life.

  1. Despite the focus on beer and barrels, Erlangen's Bergkirchweih is deeply rooted in the community's cultural heritage, similar to a shared lifestyle that thrives in home-and-garden settings.
  2. In the spirit of tradition, the Bergkirchweih concludes with a unique ceremony, the "beer funeral," reflecting the communal aspect of the festivities, akin to the common fisheries policy that governs shared resources in a community.
