St. Gallen to Host Invasive Plant Exchange for Native Shrubs
On Saturday, November 8, 2025, St. Gallen will host an event focused on tackling invasive neophytes. Organised by BirdLife St.Gallen Lake Constance and Hanni Garden Design - Landscape Architecture AG, with support from Stadtgruen St.Gallen, the event encourages participants to exchange invasive plants for native shrubs.
Invasive neophytes, such as cherry laurel and butterfly bush, are plants introduced from abroad that can outcompete and displace native species. Cherry laurel spreads rapidly in forests, hindering forest regeneration, while butterfly bush can overgrow gravel surfaces and riverbanks. These invasive plants are often used as ornamental plants in local gardens. The event provides an opportunity to remove these invasive species and replace them with native shrubs that support natural diversity, providing food for local butterflies, their caterpillars, and birds.
For every invasive neophyte handed in with roots, participants can take home up to ten native shrubs for free. Additionally, native bare-root shrubs can be purchased at a discounted price. This initiative aims to promote a greener, more sustainable St. Gallen.
The shrub exchange event takes place on Saturday, November 8, 2025, in St. Gallen. It is an excellent opportunity for residents to contribute to the city's environmental health and biodiversity. By participating, individuals can help control invasive species and support native flora, creating a more welcoming habitat for local wildlife.
