Sow Petrushko in Autumn for Early Spring Greens
Petrushko, a type of parsley (Petroselinum crispum), is best sown in autumn for a head start on fresh greenery in the following spring 2024. Gardeners in Germany can find Petrushko seeds in local garden centers and hardware stores.
The optimal time for autumn sowing is late October or early November, when average daily temperatures drop to +2...+4°C and the soil starts to freeze. Light and fertile loams are ideal for sowing Petrushko. To prevent premature germination and loss of seeds, take care not to rush the sowing process.
Prepare the sowing area by choosing a flat, well-lit spot without standing water, avoiding lowlands where meltwater accumulates in spring. Dig up the soil, add compost, and create furrows about 2 cm deep. Cover them with dry soil or sand to prevent crust formation. Sow Petrushko seeds densely, cover with dry soil to a depth of 1.5-2 cm, and mulch the bed with peat, compost, or leaves.
After the snow melts, remove the cover, lightly loosen the earth, and thin the seedlings if necessary. Autumn sowing of Petrushko results in stronger plants due to natural stratification and fewer disease and pest issues in spring.
By sowing Petrushko in autumn, gardeners can enjoy fresh greenery as early as March-April. With proper care and attention to the optimal sowing time and conditions, Petrushko can thrive and provide a bountiful harvest.
