South Tampa's first community garden blooms with local passion and teamwork
A new community garden has taken root in South Tampa, thanks to the efforts of local residents. Charlotte Hillman, a long-time Tampa resident, has turned her dream into reality with SOGarden—the first community garden in the area. Nearby, the Sustainable Living Show continues to grow its audience, recently hitting a key fundraising milestone.
Charlotte Hillman moved to Tampa from New Mexico a decade ago. Her vision of a shared green space became SOGarden, now thriving in the South of Gandy (SOG) neighbourhood. The project also involved Sandi Thompson, a founding advisory board member who has called South Tampa home for nearly 20 years. Originally from Pennsylvania, Thompson helped shape the garden's development.
The Sustainable Living Show, a local radio programme, supports similar initiatives. Broadcasting every Monday at 11am on 88.5fm, the show recently met its Spring FUNd drive target. Listeners can still contribute via a tip jar or explore past episodes in the online archives. Updates and additional details are available on the show's Facebook page. For those interested in SOGarden, more information is provided on the garden's official website.
SOGarden now stands as South Tampa's first community garden, offering residents a space to grow and connect. The Sustainable Living Show's successful fundraising ensures continued support for local sustainability efforts. Both projects reflect the area's commitment to green living and community collaboration.
