Social housing constructed with eco-friendly methods makes its debut in Exeter
Octopus Energy's innovative Zero Bills Initiative, a world-first energy tariff, is set to redefine sustainable living by offering homes zero energy bills. This groundbreaking scheme, already being rolled out in Germany and New Zealand, is poised for expansion in the UK.
Key to the Zero Bills Initiative is the integration of renewable technologies and smart energy management. New homes under this initiative come equipped with solar panels, domestic-scale batteries, and heat pumps, enabling near self-sufficiency in energy use. Octopus Energy's technology platform Kraken manages supply and demand intelligently to effectively reduce energy consumption beyond what the home produces to zero.
Homes qualifying for the Zero Bills initiative are built with a focus on sustainability and quality. Verto Homes, a developer deeply committed to creating homes of exceptional quality and with sustainability at their core, is one such partner in this venture.
In a move to make sustainable living more accessible and affordable, Octopus Energy plans to trial retrofit offers as part of expanding this Zero Bills model to existing homes. Six residents in social housing at Nexa Fields in Exeter, developed by award-winning Verto Homes, will pay no energy bills for the next five years as part of this initiative.
Octopus Energy aims to deliver a further 100,000 Zero Bills homes by 2030, contributing to a reduction in carbon footprints and regular outgoings for residents. The Zero Bills Initiative is part of a larger strategy by Octopus Energy to make sustainable living more affordable and eco-friendly.
SNG, the second-largest developer among housing associations, is also part of this endeavour, aiming to deliver 25,000 new, highly sustainable homes over the next decade. The new homes at Nexa Fields have been built using state-of-the-art green technology, each receiving an A-rated energy performance certificate (EPC) with a score of 129, the highest in the UK so far.
Tom Carr, Co-Founder of Verto Homes, is proud of Nexa Fields, the UK's first fully 'Zero Bills' community, and wishes success for the first residents moving in. Nigel Banks, Director of Zero Bills Homes at Octopus Energy, expresses that the partnership with SNG and Verto Homes is beneficial for residents struggling with bills.
As the Zero Bills Initiative continues to expand, it promises to bring the benefits of sustainable living to more households, making homes more affordable and eco-friendly, and reducing the impact on the planet.
