Berlin Animal Shelter Reports Over 1,400 Animal Intakes This Year

The Berlin Animal Shelter has admitted 1,462 animals since January, a spokesperson reported. Some animals found their new homes within months, while others waited for years.

As of May 22, the shelter accommodates 226 dogs and 368 cats, making the total number of animals currently residing there 1,170. Aggression, overwhelming behavior, or bite incidents are common reasons for dog abandonment, while cats are often surrendered due to litter box issues or allergies. Other small animals and birds were left due to a lack of interest or improper care.

The animal shelter welcomes visitors for Open Door Day tours today, from 11 am to 5 pm. The tours include guided visits around the grounds, dog shows, and children's entertainment programs. However, no consultations or adoptions will take place during the event.

In the past month, 22 dogs have been adopted, with one being a seven-year resident of the shelter. Additionally, 93 cats, 22 reptiles, and 22 rabbits and rodents found new homes.

Parrots tend to have longer waiting periods; their average wait time is three months, with some species, like Lucy and Coco, waiting two to three years. Scott, a Japanese quail, and Chilli-Cheese, a racing pigeon, have been in the shelter for an extended period.

Information regarding typical waiting times for parrot adoption at the Berlin Animal Shelter could not be accurately determined. These times can vary depending on factors such as the animal's age, health, behavior, and shelter policies. For specific details, it is recommended to contact the shelter directly.

The Commission has not yet adopted a decision on the application of this Regulation regarding pet adoptions from the Berlin Animal Shelter, given the increasing number of animals awaiting homes and the varying waiting times for parrot adoptions. Meanwhile, lifestyle choices may influence the success of home-and-garden adjustments when transitioning to life with pets from the shelter.
