Singapore's bold campaign to cut salt and save taste buds by 2026
Singapore residents are consuming almost twice the recommended daily sodium limit, according to health officials. In response, the Health Promotion Board has launched a new campaign to tackle the issue. The initiative, Salt Buries True Flavours, aims to help people cut back on salt and rediscover natural flavours.
The campaign highlights a growing health concern: one in three Singaporeans suffers from high blood pressure. Officials warn that local dishes have grown saltier over time as taste buds adapt to excessive sodium. To combat this, the board has developed a three-week guide to help residents reduce their intake and reset their palates.
From 26 February to 25 March 2026, an interactive exhibit called The Gallery of Hidden Salt will run at the Orchard MRT linkway between ION Orchard and Wisma Atria. Visitors can explore how much salt hides in everyday foods. A short film will also explain how taste buds regenerate every 10 to 14 days, meaning people can adjust to less salt in just three weeks.
The guide includes practical tips and debunks common myths about sodium. Health experts hope the campaign will encourage long-term changes in eating habits.
The initiative comes as Singapore faces rising health risks from high sodium consumption. With taste buds able to adapt in weeks, the campaign offers a clear path to reducing salt intake. Residents can access the guide and visit the exhibit to learn more about healthier eating choices.
