Schwalmtal's sports hall shines brighter with energy-saving LED upgrade

The municipality of Schwalmtal has completed a major upgrade to its sports hall lighting. The old neon tubes have been replaced with modern, energy-saving LED fixtures. Mayor Andreas Gisbertz praised the move as a step toward greater efficiency in public buildings.

The project covers the main hall, changing rooms, showers, and corridors. Motion sensors now automatically turn off lights after 15 minutes of inactivity. The new LEDs consume about 20 percent less electricity than the old system and can be fully dimmed.

Almost all municipal sports facilities in Schwalmtal have already switched to LED lighting. The Bahnstraße gym was completed on 19 March 2026, following the upgrade of the local sports field last year. The work was funded by NEW (NiederrheinEnergie und Wasser) as part of its sustainability programme. The improvements will serve both the VSF Amern sports club and school sports activities. They also form part of a wider plan to modernise local sports infrastructure in an eco-friendly way.

The upgrade will cut energy use and reduce electricity bills for the sports hall. The municipality expects long-term savings alongside better lighting quality. Similar projects are planned for other public buildings in the region.
