Schübelbach's Carnival Olympics Defied Rain with Colorful Resilience
Schübelbach Primary School celebrated its Carnival Olympics with a mix of creativity and resilience. Despite heavy rain and wind, students paraded in colourful costumes before enjoying a sunny break. The event stood out as one of the few outdoor carnival celebrations in Switzerland that February.
The festivities began on February 12, 2026, known as Schmutziger Donnerstag (Dirty Thursday). Children arrived dressed as clowns, astronauts, cows, and even giant pizzas or pasta. Their costumes added a splash of colour to the gloomy weather as they marched through Siebnen.
Rain and strong winds made the parade difficult. Yet, the school pressed on with its plans. The next day, February 13, activities moved to the Sonnenhügel schoolhouse in Buttikon for the Carnival Olympics.
By midday, the weather shifted. The rain stopped, and the sun broke through just as students gathered under a tent. There, they shared refreshments and relaxed after the morning's events.
No other schools or municipalities in Switzerland reported hosting similar outdoor carnival events that month. The persistent rain had discouraged most from organising large gatherings outside.
The two-day carnival wrapped up with students enjoying a rare sunny moment. Their costumes and determination made the event memorable. Schübelbach's celebration became a unique highlight in a month when most outdoor carnivals were cancelled.
