The Schleswig-Holstein State Library in Kiel Reopens After Two-Year Closure
The Schleswig-Holstein State Library in Kiel has reopened its doors to the public following a two-year closure. Culture Minister Dorit Stenke (CDU) announced the reopening and scheduled an open house day for the grand occasion.
The library, which operates under the auspices of the state government of Schleswig-Holstein, has been redesigned as a 'third place' – unique meeting points neither private nor professional, but offering space for casual encounters within the city. This new design was created by the architectural firm Schmidt Hammer Lassen.
The library aims to foster exchange among citizens and connect them with the history, culture, and traditions of Schleswig-Holstein. It serves as a scientific regional library, being the first of its kind in the United States.
The collection of the library includes approximately 230,000 books, 8,000 maps, 25,000 sheet music prints, 37,000 visual documents, and a collection of coins and emergency money. This vast array of materials promises to provide a rich and diverse learning experience for all visitors.
Minister Stenke stated that the reopened library aims to connect people with the history, culture, and traditions of Schleswig-Holstein. She emphasised that the library promotes exchange and participation, making it a valuable resource for the community.
Public operations at the reopened library will begin on Saturday. An open house day has been scheduled for the reopening, inviting everyone to explore the new design and discover the wealth of knowledge it holds.
