Schinkel’s Pastor-Karwehl-Platz transforms into a green oasis against climate change

The transformation of Pastor-Karwehl-Platz in Schinkel is underway, led by 'Landschaftsarchitekturbüro Schmitz'. The €2.42 million project aims to create a green, climate-friendly square, funded largely by the federal government.

The redesign, titled 'More Green for Schinkel', was submitted in October 2022 under the 'Adapting Urban Spaces to Climate Change' program. It prioritizes greening and soil restoration to combat urban heat and boost biodiversity. Residents' input led to the decision against densification and an underground parking garage.

The concept by haefner jiménez betcke jarosch eliminates half the parking area, achieving a 50% de-sealing. The existing open space will be enhanced for better stay and accessible recreation. Ebertallee will feature a greened central strip, and a pocket park will include a pétanque court and table tennis table. The remaining paved area will be durable and easy to clean.

Extensive renovation work has begun, with the goal of converting the roughly 6,700 square meters of sealed surface into an attractive, green square. The project is expected to significantly improve the quality of life for Schinkel residents while contributing to climate protection.
