Sarasota's Newtown Exhibition Celebrates Black Art and Community Legacy

A new exhibition in Sarasota is putting the spotlight on the city's historically Black Newtown neighbourhood. Titled Rooted in Community, the show brings together works from artists deeply connected to the area, celebrating their influence on local culture and history. The event also marks a significant moment—Newtown was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places earlier this year. The exhibition features a diverse mix of creators, from established names to rising talents. Among them is Nevtar Navi, whose painting A Moment of Becoming explores the journey of a young Black artist and man. The show also includes three photographs by Michael Kinsey, taken from his upcoming collection Typecast: Black Icons in the American Imagination.

Newtown's artistic legacy stretches back to the mid-20th century. Through visual arts, music, and cultural expression, its artists have shaped Sarasota's identity while preserving the community's history. The exhibition doesn't just celebrate this heritage—it challenges viewers to reflect on how Blackness has been represented in America. Organisers hope the works will spark conversation, even discomfort, as visitors engage with the themes on display. For those wanting to dive deeper, an artist talk is scheduled for Thursday at 5 p.m. Tickets cost $5, and the exhibition itself remains open until April 18.

The show highlights Newtown's lasting impact on Sarasota's cultural landscape. By showcasing artists from different generations, it connects past and present while inviting the public to explore local history in a new light. The exhibition's run gives visitors weeks to experience the neighbourhood's creative spirit firsthand.
