Salzburg Gets New Service Center for Regional and Interregio Trains
A new train maintenance hall is being built in Salzburg to improve regional and interregional rail services. The €50 million project, led by ÖBB-Technische Services GmbH, will create jobs and boost sustainability. Construction officially began with a groundbreaking ceremony attended by local officials.
The 127-metre-long facility on Lastenstraße will house three maintenance tracks. Once fully operational, it will employ around 150 workers, including 50 new positions. ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG is financing the project, with ÖBB-Personenverkehr AG prioritising eco-friendly design.
The building will feature a green roof, energy-efficient materials, and a photovoltaic system producing over 300 MWh of electricity each year. Maintenance will follow a modular approach, scheduling repairs based on mileage and service intervals to cut downtime. The system also aims to reduce unnecessary train movements, lowering emissions and operational costs.
Salzburg Mayor Bernhard Auinger joined ÖBB representatives at the groundbreaking event. Speakers emphasised how the centre will strengthen local rail infrastructure and support greener transport solutions.
The maintenance hall is set to open by late 2027. Its advanced design and efficient operations will help modernise train upkeep in the region. The project aligns with broader efforts to make rail travel more sustainable and reliable.
