Sacramento Zoo’s New CEO Dan Simon Charts Bold Expansion Plans

The Sacramento Zoo has welcomed a new leader with plans for growth. Dan Simon took over as CEO in December 2025, bringing fresh ideas to expand the zoo’s footprint. His arrival follows years of discussions about the zoo’s future, including abandoned plans for a new site in Elk Grove last spring.

Simon was attracted to the role by the strong community support for the zoo. The organization has spent over a decade exploring ways to grow, and now it plans to expand onto several acres across the street from its current location.

The zoo’s expansion plans mark a shift after last year’s abandoned Elk Grove news. With new leadership and ongoing construction, changes are already underway. Simon’s focus on annual upgrades and visitor experience sets a clear direction for the coming years.
