Sabah's SPnCA: A Haven for Wildlife and Eco-Tourism
The Sungai Pin Conservation Area (SPnCA) in Kinabatangan, Sabah, has gained attention as a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists alike. This 2,632-hectare reserve, managed by SKG Green Sdn Bhd, stretches along 30km of the Kinabatangan River and serves as a crucial wildlife corridor.
SPnCA is home to an astonishing variety of bird species. It shelters 17 protected mammals, such as Bornean orangutans, proboscis monkeys, and Sunda pangolins, along with over 500 plant species, many unique to Borneo. The reserve also protects 28 bird species, including endangered ones like the white-crowned hornbill, wrinkled hornbill, and Storm's stork, as well as vulnerable birds like the rhinoceros hornbill and oriental pied hornbill.
SKG Green Sdn Bhd, the managing company, showcased its conservation efforts at the Borneo Bird Festival. It aims to reconcile oil palm cultivation with habitat protection, demonstrating how sustainable agriculture can coexist with bird conservation. The company is promoting SPnCA as both a wildlife haven and an eco-tourism destination in Sabah.
The Sungai Pin Conservation Area stands as a beacon of hope for the survival of many rare bird species. Its success in protecting diverse wildlife while allowing sustainable agriculture demonstrates the potential for responsible management in conservation efforts. The area's popularity among bird lovers and wildlife advocates further underscores its importance as a protected space.
