Russians embrace winter fun as family and friends fuel outdoor traditions

Winter recreation remains a popular pastime in Russia, with over half the population taking part regularly. A recent survey by SberInsurance and Rambler&Co found that 37% of Russians engage in winter activities several times a month. Many see these outings as an opportunity to bond with loved ones.

Cross-country skiing leads as the top winter activity, chosen by 22% of participants. Meanwhile, 51% of respondents prefer active recreation with relatives, while 16% now opt for friends—up from 13% last year. Every second person surveyed enjoys winter pursuits with family.

Costs vary, with 44% spending nothing and 26% budgeting up to 5,000 rubles for the season. However, harsh weather discourages 33% from taking part. Injuries are also a concern, as 61% of active participants reported accidents, with 13% suffering serious harm.

For many, the biggest reward is connection. Around 17% value winter activities most for the chance to spend time with family and friends.

The survey highlights a strong tradition of winter recreation in Russia, driven by family ties and shared experiences. While weather and injuries pose challenges, the majority continue to embrace seasonal activities—often without significant spending.
