The image shows an old book with a drawing of two people playing flutes, surrounded by flowers and text. The people in the drawing are wearing colorful clothing and have a cheerful expression on their faces. The flowers are in full bloom, adding a vibrant splash of color to the scene. The text on the book is written in a classic font, adding to the timelessness of the image.

Rhine-Neckar celebrates World Poetry Day 2026 with verse and innovation

The Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region will mark World Poetry Day on 21 March 2026 with a series of cultural events. From readings and workshops to interactive installations, the celebrations will highlight both historical and contemporary verse. Organisers have planned activities across Mannheim, including performances of works by 16th-century poet Louise Labé.

The festivities begin a day early, on 20 March, with the Literarisches Quadrat hosting a poetry reading at Mannheim's Abendakademie. The following day, 21 March, kicks off with a creative writing workshop for young people at Mannheim City Library.

At Bücher Bender bookstore, visitors can try the **Literaturautomat 2.0**, an interactive device generating spontaneous poems. The store will also offer on-the-spot verse compositions throughout the day. Dr. Helmut Orpel will present a **Palatinate love tragedy** at the George Mirenes Art Gallery, while poet Toma Kaas reads from her collection *UPHEAVALS* at TSV Mannheim. The programme further includes recitals of Louise Labé's poetry, paired with musical adaptations, as part of the global UNESCO observance. World Poetry Day has been celebrated annually since **2000**, promoting linguistic diversity and poetic expression worldwide.

The events will bring together poets, musicians, and literature enthusiasts across the region. Louise Labé's Renaissance verses, alongside modern works, will feature prominently in the celebrations. The day's activities aim to engage audiences of all ages with the written and spoken word.
