Rheinpark Closes for Major Expansion Ahead of IGA 2027

Duisburg's Rheinpark is gearing up for the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) 2027, with preparations well underway. The popular restaurant Ziegenpeter will temporarily close from October 6, 2022, to accommodate expansion work as part of these plans.

The closure is necessary due to extensive earthworks, heavy machinery use, and the coordination of multiple parallel projects. These activities would otherwise impair the visitor experience. The park, including the skate park, will shut down from October 6, 2022, due to increased construction activity.

Infrastructure improvements are already in progress, with work on irrigation and electrical lines underway. Meanwhile, a new viewing platform on the Erzbunker walls is set to be completed by autumn 2022. The city of Düsseldorf, landscape architecture firm Atelier Loidl, and various local and international partners are collaborating on the permanent installations for IGA 2027.

Skaters can continue to enjoy their sport during the closure, with alternative facilities such as the skate park in the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord, the mobile pump track in Hochheide, or the facility on Königstraße in the city center. The expansion of the skate park, the largest inclusive playground in the city, a newly designed area around the water tower, the entrance area, and various exhibition areas and planting works are all in the pipeline or already underway. Additionally, renovation works at the Kultushafen are also progressing.

Rheinpark is expected to reopen at the start of the IGA on April 23, 2027, following these extensive preparations and renovations. The temporary closure and associated works aim to enhance the park's offerings and visitor experience in time for the IGA 2027.
