Rheinmetall and Nooteboom join forces for military heavy-duty trailers in Europe

Rheinmetall and Nooteboom Trailers have teamed up to develop and sell military heavy-duty trailers. The new partnership targets growing demand in Europe for off-road transport systems. Both companies will combine their expertise to produce these specialised vehicles.

The two firms signed a cooperation agreement to jointly design, manufacture, and market Heavy Equipment Trailers (HETs). These systems will transport heavy military vehicles, including wheeled, tracked, and specialised platforms. Production will take place in Romania, with international sales planned from the start.

Rheinmetall brings experience in military trailer development and global market access. The German defence group employs around 33,000 people across 180 locations and reported €9.9 billion in revenue for 2025. Nooteboom Trailers, based in Wijchen, Netherlands, specialises in civilian heavy transport solutions and employs over 500 staff.

The collaboration comes as NATO procurement programs drive higher demand for heavy military transport. While no specific orders have been announced, the partnership aims to meet the needs of European defence forces. The new trailers will pair with Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles' tractors, offering complete heavy transport solutions.

The joint project focuses on developing and marketing HETs for the European defence sector. No countries have yet confirmed orders, but the system addresses rising requirements from NATO-aligned nations. Production in Romania will support international distribution as demand grows.
