Bamberg's Sandkerwa Celebrates 75th Anniversary with Duck Race Return

The historic city of Bamberg is gearing up for a special edition of its annual Sandkerwa festival, marking its 75th anniversary. One of the highlights of this milestone event is the much-anticipated return of the duck race, a popular attraction that has been absent for over a decade [1][2][3].

The duck race, known as the Entenrennen, will take place on Saturday, August 23, 2025. Hundreds of yellow rubber ducks will race from the Untere Brücke to the Markusbrücke on the Regnitz River. Participants can buy numbered race tickets for 4 euros each, with each ticket corresponding to a specific duck in the race. The proceeds from the ticket sales will support various social projects in the Bamberg region [1][2].

The festivities will kick off with a youth fishing jousting event by the Fischerzunft. The actual duck race will follow after a short framework program at 2:30 PM.

Beyond the duck race, the Sandkerwa will transform Bamberg’s historic Sand district into a bustling festival space from August 21 to 25, 2025. The event will feature traditional Bavarian festivities, including music, food, and cultural events, although specific other programs beyond the duck race and youth fishing jousting were not detailed in the sources [1][2].

Advance sales points for the duck race tickets can be found at various locations in Bamberg, such as BMW dealership Sperber, Ohmstraße 10a, Gewürzhelden Store/K & K Gewürzladen, Jaeckstraße 58, Maedla, Obstmarkt 4, Papeterie im Sand, Obere Sandstraße 14, and Spies office, Laubanger 17b [1][2].

In addition, Spielwarengigant im Ertl-Zentrum, Emil-Kemmer-Str. 19, in Hallstadt will also serve as an advance sales point for the duck race tickets.

The Sandkerwa is a significant part of Bamberg's identity and a highlight in the event calendar of the UNESCO World Heritage city. This revival of the duck race is a standout event for the milestone anniversary of the Sandkerwa [1][2][3].
