Review of Romanian Film - Sizzling Summer Lineup
In the world of cinema, Romania and Europe have been home to some captivating stories and iconic films. Let's embark on a journey through the silver screen, starting with the Dollars trilogy, a series of three films set in the American Wild West, produced by the master of the spaghetti western, Sergio Leone. Clint Eastwood, known for his portrayal of the lone gunman, brings these films to life. The trilogy includes "A Fistful of Dollars" (1964), "For a Few Dollars More" (1965), and the most famous, "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" (1966).
Moving across the Atlantic, we find ourselves in New York, with Audrey Hepburn's lovingly eccentric Holly Golightly in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961). This film, which was screened in Bucharest this week, catapulted Hepburn to stratospheric stardom.
As we venture further, we arrive at the French Riviera, where Éric Rohmer's "The Collector/ La Collectionneuse" (1967) unfolds. This film tells the story of a young woman 'collecting' lovers while vacationing in the south of France and of two older men who want to ensure her morals do not degrade too much. "The Collector/ La Collectionneuse" is currently being shown at cinema Victoria as part of an homage to Rohmer.
Romania's cinematic landscape is also rich and diverse. Horia Cucută and George ve Ganæaard's "Dismissed/ Clasat" is a low-budget, independently financed Romanian thriller. Meanwhile, Bogdan Mureșanu's "Magicianul/ The Magician" is a gorgeous animated period film set in the multi-ethnic port town of Sulina at the beginning of the 20th century.
For those seeking films with a summery setting or atmosphere, Bucharest offers outdoor cinema festivals such as Cinema în Aer Liber. However, specific films associated with a summery atmosphere were not found in the Romania Insider article.
Lastly, for film enthusiasts in Romania, TVR1 and TVR2 have aired the Dollars trilogy, and there may be some reruns. So, grab some popcorn and settle in for a cinematic adventure!
