Rare Wryneck Breeds in Regensburg for First Time
A wryneck breeding for the first time has been spotted in the Winzerer Heights area, marking a significant step in preserving local biodiversity and the nature and cultural landscape of the region. This project, aiming to optimize habitats for local species, has received a €7,000 boost from the citizens' foundation of Volksbank Regensburg, benefiting the landscape conservation association Regensburg.
The project involves installing specialized nest boxes designed to cater to the needs of the wryneck and the red-breasted flycatcher, two endangered species that thrive in open landscapes and structurally rich orchards like those found on the Winzerer Heights in Regensburg. The wryneck, a rare woodpecker species, has shown a preference for these areas for breeding. The red-breasted flycatcher, another endangered species, also stands to gain from this measure as it requires similar habitats. The €7,000 donation will fund a joint project of the landscape conservation association and the state association for bird protection to preserve these endangered bird species.
