Project Pastil launches in Mindanao to boost student digital literacy

A new digital literacy initiative has launched in Mindanao to help students develop essential online skills. Named Project Pastil, the programme takes inspiration from a simple rice meal, symbolising its mission to 'feed' young minds with knowledge for the digital age. Globe, in partnership with the Ayala Foundation, introduced the project at the University of Southern Mindanao in Cotabato Province.

The University of Southern Mindanao, recognised for its strong focus on science, technology, agriculture, and industry, has long supported digital inclusion. Project Pastil builds on this by offering students access to Globe SIM cards and pre-loved 5G smartphones preloaded with key applications like GlobeOne, GCash, and Globe Benta.

The programme aims to teach digital literacy, ethical AI use, and leadership skills. Students will learn to navigate the online world safely, with a focus on combating Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) and Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Material (CSAEM). Globe's Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP) will also be part of the training, covering online safety, data privacy, cybersecurity, and responsible AI.

Andrene Buctuan, Globe's Area Operations Head, explained that the initiative seeks to empower students with practical skills, an entrepreneurial mindset, and academic leadership. Kiss Ekong, Assistant Vice President for Territory Business, added that the project prepares students to contribute to safer, more inclusive digital communities.

Project Pastil also introduces a new tech-driven Globe Ambassador Program for Mindanao. Selected students will gain structured, part-time opportunities to further develop their skills.

Since 2020, at least 12 other universities across the Philippines—including the University of the Philippines Diliman, De La Salle University, and Ateneo de Manila University—have partnered with telecom firms like Globe and PLDT, as well as the Ayala Foundation, to promote digital responsibility and media literacy among students.

The initiative provides students with tools and knowledge to engage responsibly in the digital world. By combining technology, education, and leadership training, Project Pastil aims to create a safer and more informed online community in Mindanao.
