Platz des 4. Juli: Renovation to Create Green Space in Lichterfelde Underway
A major transformation is underway at July 4th Square in Berlin-Lichterfelde. The once asphalt-covered traffic zone is being turned into a green public space as part of an ecological compensation project. Work has already begun, with trees planted and large sections of paving removed.
The redesign will cover roughly 12,000 square metres of the square. Most of the area will be unpaved and greened, though a small section will remain sealed for use by the Berlin Driving Schools Association. The project focuses on creating open meadows and planting zones, with around 40 new shrubs and trees joining the existing 14 linden trees.
Native and drought-resistant species have been chosen to reduce long-term maintenance needs. Paths will be made of permeable materials like gravel, sand, and natural stone, allowing rainwater to soak into the ground instead of running off. The initiative is led by DB InfraGO AG in partnership with Grün Berlin GmbH, a city-owned company. Funding for the €1.17 million project comes from a broader compensation package tied to the expansion of the Dresden Railway south of Südkreuz station.
The redesign will permanently open most of the square to the public. Once complete, the space will feature more greenery, improved drainage, and lower maintenance requirements. The changes aim to offset environmental impacts from nearby railway upgrades.
