Plant Crocuses Now to Save Bees This Winter

Autumn is the perfect time to plant bee-friendly early bloomers like crocuses, as advised by the social enterprise 'Bienenretter Manufaktur'. The organisation, which operates bee food vending machines, encourages this practice to provide crucial food sources for bees, especially after dry years when other food is scarce.

The process involves burying crocus bulbs three times as deep as their thickness. Planting can continue until December if the soil remains frost-free. Crocuses and other early bloomers with bulbs and tubers are more resilient to summer drought and frost than other plant species.

The 'Bienenretter Manufaktur' provides native plant filling material at cost price for the capsules in their vending machines. The first of these machines, called 'Bienenfutterautomat', was installed in Dortmund in 2019 by inventor Sebastian Everding. Today, the network spans over 300 locations nationwide. The machine in Dülken offers crocus bulbs for just 50 cents to encourage bee-friendly planting.

By planting crocuses and other early bloomers this autumn, we can help bees survive the winter and support their populations. The 'Bienenretter Manufaktur' makes this easy and affordable through their nationwide network of vending machines. Sponsorship contributions from these machines go towards their educational work, promoting bee conservation.
