Parents call for 30 MPH speed limit near schools
In the charming town of Bispingen, a group of concerned mothers, led by Antonia Spille and Julie Kelling, are advocating for a safer community. Their campaign focuses on establishing a 30 km/h speed limit around the Grund- und Oberschule (GOBS) and in the town centre.
Antonia Spille, whose older child is in the second grade and younger one will start school in the summer, has expressed her concern about the lack of signage indicating a school zone at bus stops. Additionally, she has encountered resistance from the county regarding the installation of a speed camera due to the perceived shortness of the spot in front of the school.
The street in question, Töpinger Straße, runs curvy and is often not well visible, leading to misjudgments. Dangerous situations have been reported, particularly during morning and lunchtime when the street is busy. In the past, critical situations have occurred with the truck delivery traffic for discount stores, where a child had to jump aside to avoid being hit.
The mothers have also broadened their request to address the street's poor visibility and the dangerous situations at the Edeka market. Pedestrians crossing the street between the car park and the shops regularly pose a risk.
Julie Kelling, mother of three children, finds it unacceptable that the traffic light directly in front of the school was out of order for so long in January and was repaired in February. She, along with Antonia Spille, is putting pressure on the local government and traffic authorities to take action.
As of now, the mothers have collected 427 signatures for their petition, with a goal of reaching 500 to put more pressure on the municipality and Heidekreis district, which are responsible for the streets. The mothers of the campaign, Antonia Spille and Julie Kelling, have children who attend the GOBS, and Spille's son is a bus child, having witnessed dangerous situations involving children at the road.
The mothers' campaign has expanded its request to include the town centre, aiming to create a safer environment for all residents and visitors in Bispingen.
