Timber-Frame Houses Draw Thousands in Upper Lusatia

The picturesque timber-frame houses in Upper Lusatia, a region in East Saxony, continue to entice visitors with their historic charm. During the "Day of the Open Timber-Frame House," nearly 100 homes welcomed around 8,000 curious onlookers on the last Sunday of May, organizers reported. Visitors ranged from those merely fascinated by these dwellings to timber-frame homeowners seeking renovation advice.

Timber-frame houses, characteristic of East Saxony, Silesian, and North Bohemian regions, boast a distinct oak-framed structure. In the districts of Bautzen and Görlitz, over 6,000 of these residences remain, most built after 1650. Their enduring quality and unique designs display the region's artisanal skill and creativity. No two houses are identical. The natural building materials, consisting mainly of wood, clay, straw, and stone, align with current ecological principles.

The "Upper Lusatian Timber-Frame House Route" covers 112 kilometers, intertwining the towns and communities of Ebersbach-Neugersdorf, Kottmar, Herrnhut, Oderwitz, Mittelherwigsdorf, Großschönau, and Seifhennersdorf. This section forms part of the "German Timber-Frame Road."

Established in the final week of May, the "Day of the Open Timber-Frame House" aims to promote these historical structures and encourages preservation efforts. The Timber-Frame House Foundation, which primarily provides individual expert advice for builders and owners, organizes the event. Furthermore, it provides access to funding, specialist firms, and its own funds for house conversion and renovation. Advocating for traditional craft techniques and historical building materials, the foundation champions the preservation of timber-frame houses.

With their rich history, unique designs, and environmental harmony, timber-frame houses in Upper Lusatia continue to captivate visitors and inspire architectural admiration. The "Day of the Open Timber-Frame House" underscores the region's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage, attracting tourists, and fostering sustainable building practices within contemporary architecture.

The community policy established by the "Day of the Open Timber-Frame House" in Upper Lusatia encourages open houses and public engagement, particularly for those interested in timber-frame homes and their renovation. Meanwhile, the employment policy, with the Timber-Frame House Foundation offering expert advice and funding for conversion and renovation projects, bolsters home-and-garden industries and preservation of the region's timber-frame houses, reflecting a lifestyle rooted in tradition and ecological harmony.
