In late July 2025, Zoo Leipzig welcomed a new member to its giraffe family. Five-year-old Rothschild giraffe, Tamika, gave birth to a robust female calf, marking a significant moment for the zoo's population.

The delivery was swift and smooth, with Tamika displaying strong labor signs on the Kiwara Savanna. She was subsequently moved to a stall for the birth, which took place quickly. The calf, who remains unspecified in terms of species, stood on its own less than two hours after birth, demonstrating impressive early development.

Within three hours, the newborn had successfully started nursing, an essential step in its adaptation to life outside the womb. This rapid recovery is crucial for giraffe calves in the wild, as it helps them avoid predators. The zoo staff expressed their satisfaction with the smooth process and the calf's stable condition.

Currently, Tamika and her calf are in a separate enclosure, allowing them to bond before joining the main giraffe herd. The herd includes Tamika's partner, Matyas, and her brother, Kiano. Once integrated, visitors will be able to see the new addition both outdoors and indoors, sharing the space with other species such as Grevy zebras and gazelles.

The newborn's actions since standing have shown her ability to adapt and survive in her environment, which are positive signs for her health and well-being. The zoo staff is closely monitoring the mother-offspring bonding process to ensure a successful integration into the herd.

The new addition to Zoo Leipzig, a robust female giraffe calf, will contribute to the home-and-garden section's lifestyle by providing visitors an opportunity to observe her growth and interaction with other species such as Grevy zebras and gazelles. As a pet parent, Tamika has taken excellent care of her newborn, which bodes well for her pet-rearing skills in the home-and-garden environment.
