Nizhny Novgorod’s Malaya Pokrovskaya Street Becomes a Car-Free Urban Oasis

Major changes are underway on Malaya Pokrovskaya Street in Nizhny Novgorod as the city transforms it into a pedestrian zone. The project, managed by the local administration, will stretch from Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street to Architect Kharitonov Street. Work has already begun, with upgrades to sidewalks, traffic systems, and underground utilities in progress.

The redesign includes widening sidewalks to up to 11 metres and relocating utility cables underground. Crews are also installing drainage channels, tactile paving for accessibility, bollards, and a new bus stop shelter. Road signs and traffic lights are being upgraded at key intersections, including Gorky Square and the crossing of Ilyinskaya and Masylakov Streets.

The project will fully pedestrianise the section from Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street to Architect Kharitonov Street. Improved walkways, traffic management, and artistic elements aim to create a more accessible and inviting space. The city expects the changes to enhance both safety and aesthetics in the area.
